From Sand Quarry to World-Class Destination
The land that would become Nathan Benderson Park was once a phosphate and sand mining quarry — a borrow pit created during the construction of Interstate 75 in the 1980s. The excavation left behind a massive, man-made lake surrounded by flat, open terrain in the heart of Sarasota County.
Community leaders saw potential where others saw an abandoned pit. The lake's calm, protected waters and consistent depth made it an ideal candidate for a world-class rowing course. A bold vision began to take shape: transform this neglected landscape into a premier multi-sport venue and public park.
The park is named after Nathan Benderson, a prominent Sarasota philanthropist and real estate developer whose generosity and civic commitment helped catalyze the project. His legacy lives on in every race, every community event, and every family that enjoys the park today.

The Quarry Years
Interstate 75 construction creates a large borrow pit in Sarasota County. The excavation leaves behind a deep, calm lake spanning roughly 400 acres — the future heart of Nathan Benderson Park.
Public-Private Partnership Formed
Sarasota County and SANCA (Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates) join forces in a historic public-private partnership to develop the site into a world-class multi-sport venue and community park.
FISA-Standard Course Completed
The rowing course is designed and built to meet FISA (World Rowing) standards — a 2,000-meter, 8-lane competition course, making it one of the finest purpose-built rowing facilities in North America.
USRowing National Championships
Nathan Benderson Park hosts the USRowing Masters National Championships, putting Sarasota on the map as a premier rowing destination and proving the venue's ability to handle elite-level competition.
The Finish Tower Opens
The iconic Finish Tower is completed — a landmark multi-story facility serving as the operational hub for race timing, event management, and spectator viewing. It becomes the signature structure of the park.
World Rowing Championships
The park hosts the 2017 World Rowing Championships, welcoming athletes from over 60 nations and drawing international attention to Sarasota County. The event is widely regarded as one of the best-organized in World Rowing history.
A Thriving Community Hub
Nathan Benderson Park hosts more than 600 events annually — from Olympic rowing trials and NCAA Championships to dragon boat races, triathlons, 5Ks, fitness classes, and family festivals. The park serves hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Nathan Benderson Park's 2,000-meter, 8-lane rowing course was designed to meet the exacting standards of FISA (World Rowing) — the international governing body for the sport. The lake's protected waters, consistent depth, and minimal current create ideal conditions for fair, world-class competition.
